Equipment Rules
DSM TARGET AND SCORING CHANGES
TARGET
Scoring zones will increase to
three areas:
- “A” – brain, spine,
heart
- “B” – lungs and
liver
- “C” – remainder of
target
TARGET SCORING
- “A” is worth 6
points
- “B” is worth 3
points
- “C” is worth 2
points
-
At least 50% of the bullet’s diameter must be in the scoring area (no
more just touching the perf).
FAILURE TO NEUTRALIZE (FTN)
- To avoid a FTN on a
target that requires 2 shots, a shooter must have a minimum of 6 points.
- To avoid a FTN on a
target that requires 3 or more shots, a shooter must have at least 1 “B”
hit with a minimum of 6 points.
POINT DEDUCTIONS
- MISS – is minus 20
points from your score.
- FTN – is minus 10
points from your score.
- NO SHOOT – is minus
10 points for every hit.
- PROCEDURAL – is
minus 10 points for every infraction.
SCORING CALCULATION
Your score is calculated by
taking your points divided by your time, which gives you a “hit factor”
EXAMPLE: 200 points /
21.07 seconds = a hit factor of 9.49
The highest “hit factor” is the
winner of the match and everyone’s score is compared to the winner’s -
what percentage of the winner’s, is your “hit factor”.

All equipment used
in DSM matches must meet the following simple guidelines; equipment must
be practical for self-defense use, concealable, and suitable for all day
continuous wear and must be worn in a manner that would be appropriate for
all day continuous wear.
The match director
will be REQUIRED to dis-allow any equipment that does not meet this simple
criterion. If you wouldn't carry it to defend yourself, you can't shoot or
use it in Defensive Shooting Management. If you are caught using equipment
that is not in the guidelines set forth and not in the spirit of defensive
pistol competition and the match director is convinced you did so to gain
a competitive advantage, you will be disqualified from the entire match.
No re-shoots will be
given for equipment failures. In the real world there are no re-shoots!
